A Mountain of Japanese Animation News Arrived Over the Festive Season
The Yuletide season present a wealth of pursuits much better than scanning the updates: discovering surprises, indulging in delicious food, and employing deep breathing to not snapping at family members. I hope you managed to do all these things and more. However, the world of entertainment never sleeps, and this is especially true for the realm of anime. A slew of noteworthy developments emerged during the holidays, and should you overlooked a few, here is a summary of the biggest bits.
One-Punch Man Its Third Season Is Moving Forward (Come 2027)
Truly the most surprising piece of news, the much-discussed disaster that was season 3 of One-Punch Man failed to halt further production. Season 3 will come back with a follow-up batch of episodes in 2027—so far away they could have called it season 4. Adding to the surprise, the studio J.C. Staff will continue to be at the helm. On a positive note this time, helmer Shinpei Nagai is on board to direct from the start, which could be taken as a positive development. But, the key visual for the new episodes is identical to the one used for season 3, just with characters Saitama and Garou looking opposite ways. This leads one to believe that, by now, they could be mocking the fans.
Ruri Dragon Is Set to Be the Premiere Shonen Jump Anime From Kyoto Animation
Kyoto Animation has built a standing for being an top-tier animation studio, distinguishing itself not just for the superb artistry of its output but for the good working conditions of its employees—a uncommon practice in the industry. Curiously, until now, it had not produced an anime adapted from a manga serialized in Shonen Jump, perhaps the most iconic magazine in the industry. Ruri Dragon will end that streak, and what a excellent choice it is. The manga by Masaoki Shindo gained widespread acclaim when it debuted in 2022 after just a handful of installments, but then went into a two-year hiatus due to the author's health issues. When it came back with a reduced workload, the series proved it still retained the fans' affection and positive sentiment, and now the community is ecstatic about the forthcoming KyoAni adaptation.
Kingdom Season 6 Has a Sequel Now in the Works
Kingdom is the highly popular, decades-spanning Shueisha manga that is aside from One Piece. If you've are unfamiliar with it before, it's because it only just received an English localization, but the anime has been going on for years, and its sixth season was a further excellent entry. As it happens that was just the first cour, because a "sequel" has been confirmed as in production, and it will very likely debut in 2026.
Science Saru Will Adapt A Witch in Mongolia Into an Anime Series
One more studio known for the excellent quality of its work, Science Saru has given us critically acclaimed works of the caliber of Space Dandy, Devilman Crybaby, and, more recently, Dandadan. This time, the studio will be handling the adaptation of Tomato Soup's manga A Witch's Life in Mongol, based on the real historical figure of Fatima, an influential woman and scholar in the Mongol Empire in the 13th century. Based on the trailer, the anime named Jaadugar: A Witch in Mongolia will have a distinctly fresh and captivating visual style, which is somewhat reminiscent of Ranking of Kings. Scheduled to launch in July 2026, this one will definitely be on my watchlist.
Tougen Anki Will Continue With a Season Two
Immediately following the conclusion of the final episode of the first season, it was revealed that Tougen Anki will be securing a sequel. Based on the Japanese legend of Momotaro, Tougen Anki is based on the manga by Yura Urushibara. The upcoming season of the anime will cover the Nikko Kegon Falls Arc, but a firm premiere date has yet to be revealed.
